ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is dedicated to telling stories of the soul through dance. I make feel-good dances that invoke a sensual experience within the body. I see performing as a community activity that requires participation from both the dancers and the audience, so my work stems from the goal of creating a warm, welcoming environment for everyone in the room. Dancing makes me feel good, and I want to share that feeling with you. With storytelling at the forefront of my creative work, my dances follow narrative structures that tell stories of love, queer identities, and community. I want to tell the stories of my community, as well as listen to the stories of others. It is human tradition to pass down stories through theater and dance, and I wish to perpetuate that tradition.

I create works that cover multiple genres, but I primarily focus on commercial styles such as contemporary, heels, jazz funk, and my specialty: burlesque jazz. I infuse historical research with spectacle to support the roots of styles, like jazz and hip hop, that hold cultural significance and often get lost in commercial spaces. Knowing that dance stems from ritual and games, I hope to create a sense of play and joy within my dances. I want dancing to be a joyful experience and to serve as an escape from everything else that you may have going on.

If anything, my dances are meant to be fun! I tell my dancers/students that it is okay to be messy and ugly and raunchy when we dance because those are all a part of the human experience as much as beauty and grace and control. Dance is as well. I teach ages 4 through senior citizens,

and my #1 rule stays the same, no matter what I am teaching or creating: I want what we are doing to feel good and for you to leave the experience feeling satisfied, regardless of if you are performing or watching.
